08/31/03 I got to see the movie American Splendor today. I liked the way they mixed drama with documentary, and a comic-book approach to telling the story. I'm not the biggest comics fan, but I still enjoyed the craft behind the movie and its very dark humor. 08/26/03 Found this great 8-part article from Edmunds.com called Confessions of a Car Salesman. It's a nice little insight into the world of these sleazemongers. 08/22/03 <rant> Yikes. It's almost time for that great huge steaming lump of bullshit they call Burning Man. The very thought of being surrounded by a bunch of naked San Francisco and Silicon Valley liberals all off their faces on drugs, covered in body paint, while paying over $200 for the privilege of dancing like idiots in a steaming hot desert which no-one in their right mind should even have the audacity to inhabit during August, and destroying the precious ecosystem that once existed there, is utterly abhorrent to me. </rant> 08/21/03 I was at my health provider's pharmacy yesterday evening picking up a prescription, and the TV in the waiting area was playing the most appalling Michael Bolton (complete with mullet) video which also seemed to feature some dreadful sci-fi cartoon/animation thing going on. It struck me as odd that in this place where people are supplied with medicine to make them better, that something so horrible would be displayed on the TV. But when I thought about it some more, I realized that there could be some reverse psychology going on here. Perhaps, by broadcasting such a heinous music video, all the people who were sick and waiting for cures, would look up at the TV, see this unmitigated shite, and discover that life really isn't that bad after all. 08/16/03 Finally, after many hours of ploughing and scanning, they're up at last: the photos from my recent NorCal/SoCal trip. Enjoy. 08/15/03 This is where I stand. How about you?
Sometimes the simplest ideas are the most inspired. An A-level politics student called Jason Whiley had a bet with his dad to find out just how interesting British MPs are these days. He ended up writing to hundreds of them to discover if they've ever rollerbladed, skateboarded, been on a space-hopper, etc. Many wrote back, and some provided pictures, and you can see it all at Statesman or Skatesman? 08/14/03 So it seems I can't go a single day without taking my medication, or else I crack up. What a life 'eh? Better living through chemistry? It would seem so... 08/13/03 Swimming Pool is one of the more interesting movies I've seen lately. It's an Anglo-French independent film starring the wonderful Charlotte Rampling. It's all about sexual rivalry and is kind of haunting in a very subtle way, as well as being utterly compelling throughout. 08/09/03 While I'm still scanning in my vacation photos (yep, it's taking eons) I did come across a couple of photos I shot in June of those weird squidgy things that appear on the beaches of northern California, and some kids having fun by the sea. 08/06/03 So, Arnold Schwarzenegger standing for Governor of California is really not a bad thing, in fact, I reckon he'll win it. But really, it's just too much. This state is just too damn weird for me sometimes, it freaks me out. 08/04/03 I've put in an order for another Lomo LC-A from some dodgy Russian eBay seller. Having shot extensively with mine for the past week, I'm still sometimes only getting 12-15 photos coming out on each roll, and a lot of blank frames. Still, this one has served me well, but it's about time I moved onto Lomo #3 I think. 08/03/03 I've traveled a grand total of 1800 miles in the past week up and down California, and it has been marvelous. I got to really relax and mull things over, as well as being on some of the most truly isolated beaches and roads California has to offer. Here are some highlights:
