03/28/02 My folks are visiting from London and it's their first time in California, so there's been plenty of photo opportunities! Luckily my dad likes to take pictures too. Of course, while he's taking shots of Alcatraz, coastlines, and all that cool stuff, muggins here is trying to be all arty-farty and shoot rusty doors and crap like that... 03/24/02 For the 28th year in a row, I failed to win an Oscar. 03/23/02 It's weird working on Saturday as I did today due to impending visit from parents and taking time off over the next couple of weeks. People drive too slowly on the freeway even though there's less traffic. Then the office is so quiet it's kind of eerie. As if it isn't eerie enough when it's full of people. When I got home, I discovered another roll from York Photo I'd almost forgotten about. This was another case of a roll of Lucky film over-saturating reds something chronic - unless they did something funny with the processing. I quite like the way this turned out - almost reminds me of a painting. In the meantime, I'd actually go as far as to say this is one of my favorite photos I've taken for a while... and I'm not even quite sure why... perhaps it's just the color tones and the composition - one thing for sure, it's another reason why I love the Lomo LC-A. 03/18/02 If you ever saw The Dukes of Hazzard, you'll probably remember Flash. It can get lonely around the Holidays. A new definition of the term sub-compact. Next week I get to shoot the other half. 03/14/02 I had a dream last night in which I was late for a meeting. I hate it when work somehow manages to infiltrate even my subsconscious. In fact, it's downright scary.
Before I started taking a serious interest in photography, I don't think I could name a single master photographer. Except perhaps the bloke who always used to shoot the Queen - Lord Litchfield, that's the geezer. Oh yeah, and David Bailey. But apart from that, I've only just recently discovered the work of a few people who I think are fantastic. One is photojournalist Harry Benson, and the other is probably not as well known, and I came across his stuff quite by chance because of my job. He's called Robert Brook, and his work reminds me of home (UK), but not necessarily in a positive way. There's some others too. When I think of them I may scrawl them here. 03/13/02 "I gotta change my shirt - it's sticking to me - I'm sweating like a cunt." Sorry about that. I just ordered Sexy Beast on DVD. 03/11/02 Interesting article this about what could be the coolest digital camera in the world. On an unrelated note, I think I've finally discovered what hell might look like. 03/10/02 The latest Dogme 95 movie Italian For Beginners is an absolute gem. It goes without saying that it's wonderfully different from most Hollywood movies. It's sweet, romantic, and moving, but not at all sentimental. It's dashed with good humor, but there's also a great deal of emotion and sadness in places. The performances are all excellent, very natural and totally convincing, and on the whole, it's a hugely refreshing piece of cinema. 03/09/02 Okay. I confess. I'm addicted to this. The kids are going crazy for it. 03/07/02 I really think it's about time I did some self-absorbent 'woe is me' thoughts and feelings stuff on this page, don't you? Looking over what I've written these past few months, this whole section hasn't proved to be in the least bit insightful, just rather bland and pithy - here's some new photos, here's a movie I went to see - I thought perhaps I would use this space better, allow my emotions to ooze out, exorcise personal demons, and somehow feel better about myself. Fuck that shit. I'm going to bed. 03/04/02 Weirdness... this web site has been functioning perfectly happily from home, but whenever I check it at work it doesn't appear... in fact all the Freeservers and FWS1 sites don't want to appear on our corporate network. If anyone knows why this happens and how it can be corrected, please let me know. 03/03/02 After 22 years of playing together, I finally got to see The Fastbacks live. I can't remember if they ever played in the UK - if they did, I didn't get to see 'em. So, I've waited for years to see them live, and just my luck, I get to see what will probably be their last ever show together now that singer Kim Warnick has decided to leave. They played a good set, but it all seemed rather subdued and somehow lacked something. But that's probably just me... I just don't seem to be as excited by live gigs as I used to be in my younger days.
